50 ready-made video hooks, sorted by emotion

50 tested openers for TikTok, Reels and Shorts, grouped by the reaction clip emotion that matches each one. Copy, drop on screen, post.

A hook is the line that shows on screen in the first 2 seconds, next to the face that reacts. Line and emotion have to match: shock copy over a smiling face creates noise, and noise costs retention. That is why this list is sorted by emotion instead of by niche. Pick your clip's emotion, take the line, swap whatever is in brackets.

Shock: for an impressive feature

  • I can't believe this is free
  • I waited 3 years for [task] and it took 4 seconds
  • this should be illegal it's so easy
  • I paid [price] a month and I could have done this myself
  • nobody told me you could do it like this
  • this deleted 6 hours from my Tuesday
  • watch what happened when I clicked one button

Laughter: for your audience's everyday pain

  • who else is still doing [task] by hand in 2026?
  • my client asking for one more change at 11pm
  • me explaining the same thing for the fourth time
  • the face of someone who found out too late
  • me swearing I'd organize this next week
  • it's not just me who does this, right?

Curiosity: for a new product in a known category

  • nobody is talking about this yet
  • I found this buried and I'm not keeping it quiet
  • why does nobody use [method] instead of [alternative]?
  • I tested what everyone ignores and look what happened
  • there's a way to do [task] without [obstacle]
  • this is what [profession] won't tell you
  • save this before it gets taken down

Skepticism: for breaking price or promise objections

  • I tested it so you don't have to
  • I thought it was fake until I opened it
  • another [category]? that's what I thought too
  • I didn't believe the price, so I checked
  • they promised [promise]. I wrote it down, back at the end
  • I'm about to prove this doesn't work

Amazement: for a strong visual result

  • look at the before and after
  • this took 40 seconds start to finish
  • and it was done, I didn't touch anything
  • I had no idea it would come out like this
  • show this to anyone still doing [task] by hand
  • I thought this would take all afternoon

Frustration: for attacking the expensive alternative

  • I'm done paying [price] for this
  • [competitor] charges for something that should be basic
  • why is [task] still this hard?
  • this cost me a week of work for nothing
  • no more redoing the same thing every Monday
  • I shouldn't need 4 tools for this

Relief: for automation and time savings

  • I finally stopped doing this by hand
  • I haven't touched this since I found it
  • 5 minutes for what blocked my whole month
  • now I just press one button
  • got this out of my head for good
  • my Mondays changed because of this

Excitement: for launches and offers

  • this just dropped and I already tested it
  • this changes how you do [task]
  • if you do [task], stop everything and watch
  • I waited all year for this
  • I'm using this on every project from now on
  • hurry, the free version is still open

How to use this list without burning the hooks

  • One line per video. A hook is not a caption: it is the first idea that lands in the viewer's head.
  • Match the emotion of the copy to the emotion of the face. Most common mistake, easiest to avoid.
  • Keep the line above the caption bar and below the top edge, so the app's interface does not cover it.
  • Swap only the hook and keep the rest of the video identical: that is how you learn which emotion sells in your niche.
  • Retire a hook when retention drops two weeks in a row. Good lines wear out, and they wear out fast.

Frequently asked questions about video hooks

How long should a hook last?
1 to 3 seconds. Long enough for the face to land, the emotion to register and the line to be read. After that the viewer has already decided, and the video has to deliver what it promised.
Does the hook have to be spoken?
No. A large share of the audience watches muted, so on-screen text plus facial expression is enough. Speaking helps when the line is too long to read in 2 seconds.
Can I reuse the same hook across videos?
You can and you should, while it performs. Change the demo underneath and keep the winning opener. When retention drops two weeks in a row, retire the line and test another emotion.
Which emotion works best?
It depends on what you sell, and the only reliable answer comes from your own test. As a starting rule: shock for impressive features, laughter for everyday pain, skepticism for price objections and relief for time savings.
